A Humans Flaw

Most Humans in power may think they know what is right or wrong for others, but that may not always be the case. Humans are usually not to understand, until they are personally afflicted. In the book “Antigone” by Sophocles, the king known as Creon, enforces an unjust decree not to bury a body who is known as Polynices. The main character Antigone is personally affected by this decree, due to Polynices being her brother. This is especially concerning to her because the gods rule in this book about death, is that a person's spirit may not rest unless with a proper burial. Therefore Antigone breaks the rule and Creon sentences her to death. In another book “I am Malala” by Malala Yousafzi and Christina Lamb, Malala faces the …show more content…

The decree was then enforced by Creon to not bury Polynices so his soul may not rest. In a conversation between Antigone and Creon, Antigone expressed why she broke the decree saying “Ashamed? Ashamed of what? Ashamed of being loyal to my own family, my own brother?” (Sophocles 13). Antigone feels no remorse for her actions, because she committed what she felt was just. To her, being loyal to her brother was her way of expressing her love for him, so not being able to let her brother rest was very unjust to her. Creon didn’t feel that same emotion towards Polynices so therefore Creon was incapable of understanding why Antigone broke his rule, because he isn’t personally afflicted by the rule. Malala is a girl who fought against a terrible injustice, which was that women are not allowed to have an education, which was enforced by a terrorist group known as the Taliban and her country. Malala stood up for these women against these foul men. Malala recalls that after an explosion by her school everyone was in shock, especially the people who lost their homes, but the men had stated “...It was caused by women’s freedom and obscenity” (Yousafzai 107). The men in her country blamed the war on women because they were living out of control thinking they have rights. Men in her …show more content…

Stop wasting time. You servants, take her in. It’s very important to keep women strictly disciplined” (Sophocles 15). Creon believes that women should know their place, so therefore they know how to listen and not break rules. In this circumstance Antigone was the example of a woman out of control without discipline. To Antigone it is unjust and Creon would never be able to relate because he isn’t a woman and personally afflicted. Malala just as well faced unjust laws of inequality. She remembers telling a small child who asked her to go to school that, “My mother and I had already persuaded him to give free places to a number of girls” (Yousafzai 81). Malala’s father was a teacher and knew that women weren't allowed to have an education, after a small female child asked Malala if she was able to go to school she had said she had already tried convincing him even though it would break the law. The only reason why Malala and that small child couldn’t go to school is because of the unjust law that the men enforce, but therefore wouldn’t be personally afflicted because they are
