The novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly is a thrilling gothic novel. It has many twist and turn throughout the novel and the novel ends with a cliff hanger. One recurring symbol in the book is ice. According to the article, Location and the Journey in Frankenstein, the "ice in the novel represents a gothic landscape"(1). Which helps explain why this thrilling novel starts and ends in Antarctic. Ice represents silence, faith, and death for many different characters. The Creature struggling with his appearance and people being scared of him. Also when all he wanted was a friends. The Creature leads Victor to coldest and iciest place in the world, Antarctic. However, the Creature knows that Victor is not the most athletic person and is warning him if he keeps going on he will regret it. Victor eventually gets too tired to go on and finds himself, on a glacier. Victor was “left to drift away into the freezing seas” (2). Eventually, Victor floats by Walton and his ship. The crew notices a man floating on a glacier and helps him aboard their ship. "His eyes half closed, and his limbs hanging listlessly"(shelly 188).
