Prejudiced ideologies can arise in anyone which accelerates mental corruption, moreover the creation of evil in society. In the course of a drastic time period, this can become a common occurrence. Through the main antagonist, the Prophet, or Tyler Leander, Emily St. John Mandel illustrated a perfect example of how evil originates from prejudiced ideologies in the novel Station Eleven. While the novel takes place during a pandemic, Tyler pursued a spiritual path, thus growing up to become the Prophet. Although these crimes are profoundly despicable, he asserts that they are for the amelioration of the world. Eleoner, one of his juvenile escapees, outlines why the Prophet would marry a twelve-year-old: “He had a dream where God told him he was to repopulate the earth” (Mandel 123), which reasons why he has numerous young women and girls hostage. This tacits that the Prophet is delusional and obsessed with his objectives since he commits these despicable acts based on a dream he saw. Since the pandemic has wiped out the majority of the population, he believes he has been chosen to construct the "new earth" since the "old earth" has died. Enjoying his line of work, he believes that all the activities he executes are for the amelioration of mankind, which is conveyed in his statement, "All of this, all of our activities, Sayid, you must understand this, all of your suffering, it’s all part of a greater plan.” (290). This insinuates that he is sadistic and utilizes the suffering of others to advance his objectives. To carry out heinous crimes and be a dictator of citizens, he exploits his extremely biased ideas as a justification. Through the pandemic, which resulted in billions of deaths and the collapse of civilization, he perceives the positive aspects. After the Symphony’s performance, the Prophet delivers a speech, recounting the catastrophe: "The flu, the great cleansing that we suffered twenty years ago, that flu was our flood. The light we carry within us is the ark that carried Noah and his people over the face of the terrible waters, and I submit that we were saved not only to bring the light, to spread the light, but to be the light. We were saved because we are the light. We are the pure." (Mandel 60). This depicts his extreme religious response towards the flu and his lack of sympathy for the billions of civilians who died during the pandemic. Alternately, he views the deaths as a divine cleaning. He used the biblical story of Noah saving his people from the flood to prove that the saved were the light. With the employment of his fathom of faith, he abuses his power to execute evil acts against enemies. Regarding the Prophet, Kristen stated, "If you are the light, if your enemies are darkness, then there's nothing that you cannot justify. There's nothing you can't survive because there's nothing that you will not do." (138). This statement is similar to Miranda’s comment about how evil people believe they aren't evil, which is a type of survival mechanism. Kristen’s point is that if he believes that he is the light and
