What is conformity? What is individuality? Conformity is behaving according to what society accepts, following rules or laws. While individuality can be considered as the opposite. Individuality is being different from the rest, being original and being yourself, not what other expect you to be. In the book “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, conformity symbolizes a perfect society and individuality needs to be eliminated from society. “The psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests and watch the birds and collect butterflies. They want to know what I do with all my time. I tell them that sometimes I just sit and think.” Clarisse Mclellan was forced by the authorities to go to the psychiatrist. And why would they force her? Because Clarisse was individual. She would do things that the rest of society wouldn't. She was a pedestrian (which was illegal), she would talk with her family, observe and analyze things and read books. The authorities wanted a society where everyone was the same and acted the same, and Clarisse and her family were an exception to this conformity. That is why Clarisse was send to the psychiatrist. After the psychiatrist couldn't “fix” Clarisse’s individuality she was killed. The authorities' desire for a perfect society led them to the point that they had to kill Clarisse. …show more content…
