The married couple, Tom Buchanan and Daisy Buchanan, show that the worst way to fix complacency is infidelity. Both Tom and Daisy become complacent with their marriage and turn to cheating on one another as they look for something better.
Tom started cheating on Daisy just after they got married and started a pattern of infidelity. In the movie, The Great Gatsby, Tom’s affair is shown with Myrtle Wilson. WIth this affair, Tom is proving that he doesn’t truly love Daisy, therefore doesn’t want to change anything about their marriage. Daisy says, “Tom was God knows where... with God knows whom.” With Tom constantly getting calls from Myrtle, and cheating with her, it destroys his marriage with Daisy. He shows that he is complacent in his marriage with Daisy and needed something or someone else to fulfill his desires. Like Tom, Daisy wants something new and more than what she has with Tom.

Daisy decides to cheat with Jay Gatsby after she becomes bored and complacent with Tom. She finds out that her long-lost lover in Gatsby comes to find her and is now very rich. However, she does love Tom at the beginning of their marriage. Over time, though, she realizes Tom’s true self and is not in love with him like she was at the beginning. In the movie Daisy states, “I've been everywhere and seen everything and done everything. I've had a very bad time, Nicky. I'm pretty cynical about everything.” Tom’s money can only do so much. He’s shown her everything and given her everything money can buy, but Daisy feels as though she is done with Tom and wants something new.
