In the short story, Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut shows how society would be flawed through the pursuit of equality; He shows this through his use of ironic details and colloquial language.One of the best examples of irony is shown in the case of the TV announcer. “For about half a minute… the announcer tried to say, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’” (Vonnegut 2). This portrayal of how TV announcers cannot even speak shows that trying to make everyone equal can lead to the practicality of things as simple as the news, which is lost. The colloquial language such as, “Reckon it’d fall all apart” and “Gee - I could tell that one was a doozy” show how this informal language is now commonplace (2, 5).
