In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff suffers injustice throughout his entire life. Not only was he unwanted as a child but he was also ridiculed for his physical appearance, tormented by Hindley, and emotionally stabbed in the heart by his one true love, Catherine. Although Heathcliff is in a constant search of justice, he does not know how to find it. Throughout the novel, Heathcliff constantly uses revenge in order to seek justice but always ends up more disappointed than he originally starts off as.
At Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross grange, Heathcliff does not fit in. Since he was taken in as a young boy by Mr. Earnshaw, he has been alienated and treated unjustly by almost everyone. One of the characters that resented Heathcliff from the beginning was Hindley. Hindley treated Heathcliff with no respect and constantly degraded him, “He [Hindley] has been blaming our father for treating Heathcliff too liberally; and swears he will reduce him to his right place” (Brontë 30). After some time of being ridiculed by his so called “brother,” Heathcliff seeks justice for himself by taking revenge on Hindley and plotting to ruin his life, “I’m trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back. Heathcliff believes that by doing this, he will be able to make Isabella miserable which will in turn make Catherine and Edgar miserable. After being married to Heathcliff for a while, Isabella comes to the realization that her love for Heathcliff is only one sided and that he was only using her. She discusses with Nelly her hatred toward Heathcliff which demonstrates that his plan worked, “He says he has married me on purpose to obtain power over him; and he sha'n't obtain it - I'll die first! I just hope, I pray, that he may forget his diabolical prudence and kill me” (Brontë 127). Isabella’s unhappiness does not end up making Heathcliff’s situation better and overall he is still
