I'm interested in how innocence fares when it collides with hard reality ~ geoffrey S. fletcher. In the lord of the flies kids from a school in england end up on a island in the pacific from a tragic plane crash. during the time of WWII the end of innocence for these kids was impending upon them. There was no adults this led to chaos. The children on the island killed a momma pig, and eventually killed a young boy named Simon and hunted down another boy, Ralph, which led to the end of their innocence. Killing their first pig was a start to the end of jack and the boys innocence. Jack and his group were in the woods hunting for food. “the spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high-pitched scream. Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands. The sow collapsed under them” (pg 192) this quote from the book was depicted as a very gruesome killing. Ralph and all the boys were deciding who was going to be in jack and ralph's tribes when simon came to tell them the beast wasn't real. “the beast broke the ring, struggled forward broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of a rock by the sand on the edge of the water. at once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leaped onto the beast screamed struck bit tore there was no words, no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws” (pg 152) this scene depicted the murder of simon. Even though the kids knt was simon they still tricked themselves into believing that it was the beast. They did this so that they could give themselves a right for “mistakenly” killing simon so they didn't seem so barbaric. This was the real beginning of the end of their innocence.
