In Andy Weir’s novel, The Martian (2011), he portrays the idea that extreme isolation can be a powerful motivator. Andy Weir first used the text to describe how the main character, Mark Watney, is the loneliest human being that ever existed, due to how far from civilization he was stuck at. He then used very short and powerful sentences in order to connect to the reader. “I’d give anything for a five-minute conversation with anyone. Anyone, anywhere. About anything. I’m the first person to be alone on an entire planet.” (pg. 99), Weir also utilizes the use of repetition in order to further emphasize a phrase, when the passage repeated “anyone” consecutively. This supports the main idea of isolation being capable of inspiring motivation, since he explains how he would give anything just to have contact with another person. This style show the differences between someone who is stuck with their thoughts and themselves fro company, between a densely populated work space. The log format of the book tends to be much more introspective, while the NASA perspective has more characters, while focusing more on current events. This technique of writing makes the differences clear, showing how your way of thinking changes with long period of isolation. When communication is started between these two narratives, Mark Watney expresses huge joy because of his great want for at least conversation with another person. Once he can speak with them, he gains a greater chance for survival creating motivation for him to do everything possible in order to see another human life
