Isolation is “the state of being in a place or situation that is separate from others” (Britannica Dictionary.com). Some view isolation to be positive, others view it as negative. Some wish to be alone, while others fear it. Everyone has a different perception on this topic due to experiences and influence. These different perceptions are seen t from the experiences of many. One of these people is a young eleven year old boy named Ender, in the dystopian novel Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card, in which Card portrays a theme that control causes isolation which can be positive or negative in one’s life. In the book Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, Card creates a character, Colonel Graff, who tries to control a boy named …show more content…
The isolation Graff pushed onto Ender caused his health to decline quickly. He didn’t allow Ender to see any of his squadron leaders as he was only able to give them verbal commands. This can cause mental trauma and depression. Adding on, the way Graff overworked Ender also played a big role in why he became ill. He was never allowed to rest or see others. From this, it is clear to see how Graff’s actions had many negative effects on Ender. Even after seeing what Ender's training does to him, Graff keeps pushing him to the extremes which makes Ender's health decline even quicker. After Ender’s final battle, Ender slept for days, it was as if he, “Passed through lifetimes in his dreams” (Card 300). Ender ended up sleeping for over 5 days and this just shows how negatively isolation and being overworked can affect the human being. Once awake Ender was still weak and didn’t want to do anything which continues to show the grand effects on him. The effects of isolation are also shown in an article by Harvard Medical School. The author shares the frightening effects of isolation on a person. They state, “People who feel lonely (disconnected from others) have been shown to have faster rates of cognitive decline than people who don’t feel lonely loneliness …show more content…
He quickly found out it was actually against the buggers and that he had ended the war. Mazer was congratulating Ender and said, “You made a hard choice, boy. All or nothing. End them or end us. But heaven knows there was no other way you could have done it. Congratulations. You beat them, and it’s all over” (Card 296). Graff had Ender under his control throughout his entire stay in space. Graff would isolate him which made Ender have to focus entirely on his battles. Due to the isolation, he had nothing to distract him, or spend him on such as hobbies, he had to do his best on his battles. This isolation had a positive effect because the world was saved from the buggers as Ender had worked his hardest and succeeded in his battles. If Ender had not been isolated the buggers might have attacked them but Ender, “destroyed them completely. They’ll never attack us again. You did it. You” (Card 297). If Graff would not control, isolate, and work Ender as hard as he did, the buggers might have not been beaten and Earth might have been destroyed. However, since Ender “did it” they will never have to worry about the buggers again. If Ender had not been isolated, he would have probably been dead which would have been very unfortunate. From this, it is clear to see that Ender's isolation had a positive result. Continuing, Matt Johnson, Ph.D, writer, speaker, and professor
