Jim Wallis on Economic Justice
When examining controversial topics, such as economic justice, one should consider all aspects of an argument before drawing to a conclusion. In looking at economic justice, there are many different viewpoints, such as the “God’s Democrat” perspective. This is a belief held by Reverend Jim Wallis, an evangelical pastor, founder of Sojourners magazine and a former spiritual advisor to President Obama. Wallis’ ministry is based off biblical principles their impact on social issues. Another perspective is held by the talk show host Glenn Beck. On his show, Beck discusses culture wars, less government, and renewing spirituality. Overall, his view is that Americans should revert back to the values our founding fathers established. When looking at both their perspectives on economic justice, it is important to consider both sides before defining an opinion.

With economic rights, the goal is to ensure every person has the basic necessities such as shelter and food so they can reach their full potential. Economic rights can be broken down into two categories, the first category being programmatic rights. Programmatic rights define how government programs are required to serve humans in need. This includes programs like health care and financial support. The second category would be progressive rights. Progressive rights define how the government is taking progressive measures such as creating new jobs and building schools to fulfill their responsibility.
