Proctor’s Opposition to His Society In the book, The Crucible, Arthur Miller introduces us to John Proctor. Proctor is married and simple, yet he's argumentative toward his town for the persecution of “witches.” Proctor faces conflict throughout the town, his morals are challenged and his view on ethical implication are changing.
Since this his wife Elizabeth Proctor has forgiving him and no one else knows about the situation because he doesn't want to ruin his good name. Soon after the Witch Trials started, Abigail accused his wife of witch craft and the people came and got Elizabeth and took her captive. John Proctor was not happy about it at all. He knew his wife was innocent so he went down to the church and told them she was and that she wouldn't lie. In this he said that he had an affair with his servant and so the judge said I'll ask her if you did, if she says yes she's free if she says no she a witch.
John Proctor cannot see the truth because of his closed-mindedness. An example is when everyone is accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft, John asks, “Is the accuser always holy?” Cheever and Herrick went to Proctor's house to take Elizabeth after they accuse her of witchcraft, and Hale affirms, “This warrant's vengeance! I'll not give my wife to vengeance!” (860) Herrick and Cheever claim to have a warrant, but John does not want them to take her.

In some way’s Reverend Hale’s return to Salem was to save the accused starting with John Proctor. In Author Miller’s Crucible, Reverend Hale believes if he can get Mr. Proctor to confess others who are accused will follow in his footsteps. Hale uses Elizabeth, Mr. Proctors wife to accomplish the convincing. John brings the matter to Elizabeth before she gets the chance to bring up the subject of matter. Sickening with fear, but faith inside her Elizabeth tells John to as he wishes.
The end of the Crucible is very suspenseful when the protagonist, John Proctor, is faced with choosing between confessing to a lie or dying for the truth. At first, Proctor is hesitant and signs the papers, confessing himself to evil, but before the signed paper is collected by the court, he tears it apart and is sentenced to death. This was his best option, for it stopped him from living a remorseful life. His decision to tear apart the signed confession was the most correct not only for himself but for his family and the community as well.
JOHN PROCTOR: TRAGIC HERO Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a greatly revered work, and it reflected the times of America in the days of McCarthyism. Perhaps the character that connected to the audience most was John Proctor, the protagonist of the play. He reflects the mistakes that we have made in our lives, and the struggle that some of have while trying to take the blindfold off of other people. He should be considered a hero because he feels guilt, and therefore tries to make up for the fact that he once had an affair.

The reason beginning he doesn’t want to tarnish the reputations of the good christian men and women that died before him. John Proctor is a sinful man; he committed adultery, he plows on sundays, and he only goes to church once a month. Proctor says “Since we built the church there were pewter candlesticks upon the altar; Francis Nurse made them, y’know, and a sweeter hand never touched the metal.
The Salem witch trials were a time period when any individual could be accused of witchcraft for numerous reasons. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller focuses on the deviation of the trials and how the town’s most religious and honest members of the community are tried with witchcraft. John Proctor, the town’s most honest man, is accused of being a witch and must decide if he should confess or not. Proctor’s confession will stop the town from rebelling and uphold the reputations of Deputy Governor Danforth and Reverend Parris. Hale also wishes for Proctor’s confession so he does not have to feel responsible if Proctor were to be hanged for his witchcraft accusations.
