In McCarthy’s speech in Wheeling, West Virginia, he mentions how there were communists throughout the government. He targeted those treated well by the Nation, such as the wealthy and white-collar workers. Attacking people born with silver spoons in their mouths, those who are born privileged, and claiming the ones in the government are Communists increases the amount of fear the Americans had that communism was spreading. Despite McCarthy’s accusations that these people were communists, he never provided evidence that supported his claim. The Cold War was a war of ideologies and propaganda. Hence, the smallest display of failure or mistrust on one side meant a great advantage for the other. This is exactly what McCarthy did in the 1950's. He created and developed a period of negativity in his time as a senator. By doing so, he gave the Soviets an advantage, and he weakened America's image internationally.
Sam Roberts in the article “A Decade of Fear” argues that McCarthyism turned Americans against each other. Robert supports his claim by illustrating fear, describing betrayal, and comparing it to other U.S. internal conflicts. The author’s purpose is to point out a vulnerable period in American history in order to demonstrate that Americans felt prey McCarthy’s negative propaganda. The author writes in a cynical tone for an educated audience. I strongly agree with Robert’s claim.
This is an example of how McCarthy valued personal gain at the expense of others. It also shows how out of control white lies can become. Also in this article it is noted that, “McCarthy used this fear in his rise to power. He proclaimed that communist spies were everywhere and that with his help America could be saved” (U.S History.org). Using the power of fear he comes to power saying that communists are among them, and vows to expose them.
President Harry Truman signed the Executive Order 9835, the document established a loyalty program, designed to eliminate communist influence in the United States. According to this order, citizens entering employment would undergo a loyalty investigation to further prove loyalties to the Nation and disprove communist ties. Joseph McCarthy soon jumped on this idea of a loyalty program and took it a step further. Soon after the rise of McCarthy, Henry Steele Commager arose; he was not a fan of the loyalty order or the push for anti-communist beliefs. Joseph R. Sam Robert’s article, “A Decade of Fear” explains how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other by spreading the fear of Communism. Senator McCarthy informed the citizens of America about Communist spies deep within our government on February 10, 1950. He states “ I have here in hand list of 205-a list of names that were made known to the secretary of state as being a member of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in the state Department.” This quote proves that McCarthy did infact say to the public that there were Communist spies in the United States. It spread fear into the citizens because they were afraid that the country will turn Communist because of the Russian spies in the government.
In the late 1940s a lot of change came to people in the U.S. Because of the threat the Soviet Union was putting on them the U.S decided to go in to the Cold war. The first fear Americans had was when Joseph McCarthy began his witch hunt for communists. This made a lot of people scared of becoming an enemy to the nation and losing everything that they have. The "Red Scare" was a mission that the government had to put fear in many Americans.
With all of the accusations going around, people were forgetting that everyone can have their own opinion. Edward R Murrow, a television host of See It Now bashed McCarthy by saying “’We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty’” (Roberts, 2). Murrow was saying that just because a person disagrees with what the president or a government official says, does not mean they are a communist. The United States has freedom of speech, and citizens can say whatever they want about the government.
Joseph McCarthy’s claims on communism also intensified the public's concern for Communists in America and it made more people start accusing government officials. The media during this time was also not doing anything to stop the hysteria because they believed that if they stood up to McCarthy they would be accused and suspected of being a Communist and they were too scared to go through with that.
