Beowulf, composed in the first half of the eighth century, is amongst the oldest writings of the Anglo-Saxon poetry that tells the tale of the epic hero, Beowulf, and a ferocious monster called Grendel. One of the many things admired about this poem is the richness of its quality of description through words known as kennings, which are classic features of Angelo-Saxon poetry that combine words to generate imaginative alternate phrasing.
