The Great Gatsby is about a man who attempts to reclaim his past love. He lies about who he is, but in this story he isn’t the only one: everyone is a liar. Each character in the story is a liar in some way. There are three big ones I want to look at: Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom. While all of them are huge liars, only really one is to blame for how this story turned out. Gatsby is the biggest outright liar in the book. He wrote himself a new story to go out with Daisy and did it again to try and win her back. Pg 51 - “I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West – all dead now. I was raised in America but educated at Oxford, because all my family had been educated there for many years.” While Gatsby did lie to everyone it was more like he was convincing himself than any malicious intent. …show more content…
This is observed in her fight with Tom about Gatsby. She wears almost a mask to hide her true thoughts and feelings for her own benefit, even at the ruin of others. Pg 101 - “...as though she just realized at last what she was doing – and as though she had never, all along, intended doing anything at all.” All the time she had spent with Gatsby meant nothing as soon as she learned how he made his money. She left Gatsby to almost self destruction after this once she learned that she couldn’t have her cake and eat it too. Tom lies to get what he wants. This can be seen in his hypocrisy throughout the book. His hypocrisy is seen very much in his affair. Pg 101 - “Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time.” He has had many affairs but Daisy having one is unimaginable. He even tries to explain away what he does when presented with Chicago since he still loves her all the same. They all are liars, but really the most harmful is
