Examples Of Love In Dante's Inferno

Love would not be the first thing you would think of when it comes to Dante's Inferno. However, the reader will notice love multiple times throughout the story. Inferno has numerous themes throughout the story; one theme that will be discussed is love. We can see that love plays a huge role in the story and Dante's journey through Hell. Love is demonstrated in various ways with different meanings. One example of love we see is in God's Justice. This information will give the reader more insight into how love is explained throughout the story.
According to Dante’s Inferno, the following states “Justice moved my great maker;
God eternal Wrought me: the power, and the unsearchably High wisdom and first love supernal.” (Dante, Inferno 3.4-6) …show more content…

The love that Dante and Virgil share is what some would call brotherly love or phileo love. Many people such as close friends will exbit this type of love. The chacterics of phileo love includes unselfishness and kindess. In the bible we can see this phileo love between David and Jonathan. According to the 1 Samuel 18: 1-3 it states the following “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirt with David, and he loved him as himself… And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.” Even though Virgil purpose here is to sereve as guide to navigate Dante through Hell, the reader can see the relationship between these two grow over time to phileo love. During this time while they are traveling together, they begin to notice more and more about the other person personality, thus making their bond become even stronger throughout the journey through Hell. The reader can see an example of where the love between Dante and Virgil becomes stronger according to their actions in the story. As Dante begins to look for Heaven or the True way, but he gets lost as a result, therefore Beatrice sends Virgil to help him. As stated in the Inferno, Beatrice tells
