1. The novel fits the idea of magical realism because the use of magic in a real world scenario is shown in the storyline. The novel is also based in Latin America, which is where most magical realism stories are based. In Bless Me Ultima, Ultima is a curandera, which requires the use of magic to heal others. (page 8)
2. The Hero is Bless me Ultima would be Antonio because he helps restore harmony within the community of the llano. The scapegoat would be Lupito because this is the start of Anotnios loss of innocence. The devil character would be Tenorio and the mentors would be Ultima, and his family. The theory of connecting bodies around the town of Guadalupe is that as the townspeople continue to sin, the water will rise. The water around the town represents all of the hidden secrets that are outside of it. The river will wash away all sins. The water also represents the first time Antonio lost his innocence. “They would be pulling Lupito from the river” (page 22). Many dramatic events occur in the water around Guadalupe, which help Tony grow.
7. The death of Lupito represents many things. For one, it is the first event where the reader notices the loss of Antonio’s innocence, and it also helps restore the balance of good vs. evil. Lupito kills the sheriff in “cold blood” (page 20). For this action, Narcisco punishes Lupito, by shooting him. Throughout the novel, for every good deed, there is a balance of bad events that follow.
8. Ultima is accused of being a bruja, and to testify that she is not, she has to walk through a door with the resemblance of a cross nailed into the doorframe. However, Tony sees that one of the nails has fallen and broken the cross shape. Anaya includes this slight detail to show the reader, that Ultima could very well be a bruja. “You all know that a witch cannot walk through a door marked by the sign of Christ” (page 133). Florence is a character introduced to Antonio when he starts his catechism lessons. Florence does not believe in God because “He took my father and mother from me when I most needed them, and made his sisters-whores” (page 213). Throughout the story, Antonio questions his faith and the Catholic Church. When Antonio is pretending to be a priest he is the only person that says Florence is forgiven of his sins, even though he doesn’t believe in God. This events shows Tony that the Church is not perfect. It provides him with the feeling that your faith in God may fail, and that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but you should respect others.
10. Antonio has gained much wisdom through all of his experiences. The main life lesson he has learned is from Ultima, when she says “You must not despair of life, but gather strength to sustain you” (page 245). You should take unfortunate events and turn them into events that help strengthen you as an individual. Antonio has also learned how to stay strong to his beliefs, and to learn from his mistakes. I think that all of these ideas are very accurate for many adults. It is important to learn how to help a situation make you stronger, so that you gain are able to not let things break you
