This is another type of manipulation. Only giving the person what they need when they complete a certain task for them is horrible because if they don't complete the task, they will die in the end. Because Algernon is smart enough to underrate what is happening, he has no choice but to do what his masters want him to do. This is mostly the cause because Algernon is a different species, and because he is a different species, they can make him do whatever they want him to do. However, because of the experiment, they performed on him, he is now fully aware of what is going on and realizes he has no choice but to obey their commands.
