Miscommunication in physician-patient interaction can destabilize the relationship. For example, if an actual medication must be given to a patient, therefore an effective form of communication must take place between a patient and his/her physician. Physicians are there to understand their patients and helping them to improve their health, by doing so, and by fairly answering any patient’s questions and worries, telling the patient about treatment and getting to comprehend the patient not as a client or work case, but as an individual.
The critical example of miscommunication according to Sue Fisher is the story of a young student woman whose doctor suggested a hysterectomy for a pelvic inflammatory after antibiotic treatment was unsuccessful. So, she went to Fisher for advice and Fisher asked to the student to let the doctor knows that she is engaged to a doctor as well, also to know if there is another method of treatment. After knowing about the upcoming marriage, the doctor proposed another course of antibiotics that cleared up the infection, thereby avoiding having surgery. Manage care is a health insurance plan that makes available to its members the health care services provide by physicians selected by the plan and which seeks to manage the cost, accessibility, and quality of care. Under managed care doctors are less able to avoid conflicts of interest and less able to place the best interests of patients first. Also, the quality of health care is compromised by boundaries in location of diagnostic tests, length of hospital stay, and choice of specialists (Hoescht, 1996). Docs- in –a- box are clinics that can rapidly see patients for lower costs.
