An important theme in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is the relationships between all the characters and how they interact with and impact each other. For example, Miss Maudie Atkinson, one of the minor characters, always wants everyone to be treated fairly and equally. She is always caring and respects the people around her. Miss Maudie is a caregiver of the children, and is the one who helps Jem and Scout understand their father, Atticus. To begin with, Miss Maudie is a person who takes care of the children just like a mother does. An instance of this is when Miss Maudie bake cake for the children. First, while eating the cake that Miss Maudie made, she praises Atticus in front of his children. When the kids are eating cake that Miss Maudie make, she explain, “I simply want to tell you that there are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your father’s one of them,” (Lee 215). In other words, this shows how much Miss Maudie respects Atticus and shows how she tries to explain to the children, especially Jem since he is growing up, that not all men do their job but their father does all his work that he is responsible for. On top of that, Miss Maudie also shows a lot of appreciation for Atticus, so his children learn to appreciate him too. Next, while talking about religion, Miss Maudie claims, “We’re so rarely called on to be Christians, but when we are, we’ve got men like Atticus to go for us” (Lee 215). In other words, Miss Maudie tries to explain that Atticus does not go to church like other people do every day and pretend to be Christian, but always helps those people when they need him. Finally, Miss Maudie explains to Jem why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. When Jem wants to shoot, Atticus tells him not to kill a bird, so he asks Miss Maudie about it. She replies, “Your father’s right… Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 90). This also shows how much she supports
