Religion has been around for thousands of years. People, in different regions of the world, have made stories to explain how the world came to be how it is today. These stories and legends grow into different cultures and beliefs around the world and turn into a religion. Some of the most popular religions are Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. All of these religions have different thoughts and ideas for the goal to live a life of fulfillment and to be the best person you can possibly be. But in real life, people are not perfect and make mistakes. Some of these mistakes can be influenced by society which contradicts a person’s religious beliefs. More specifically, what beliefs do Christians have? According to Brian Edgar, who is the Director of Theology and Public policy for the Evangelical Alliance, says that the main core Christian values are grace, hope, faith, love, justice, service and peace. Christians believe that there is only one God and if you are a good person, you go to Heaven in the afterlife. Even if a person has made a mistake, you can always ask God for forgiveness. Everyone makes mistakes, but not all Christians take accountability to recognize and fix those mistakes made. The 17th to the 19th centuries were sadly the prime moments for slavery in American history. It was the societal norm to have slaves, if you were wealthy enough, or believe that African Americas were not equal to white people. Many Christians who valued those religious beliefs were blinded by the fact that slavery is against these values. In The Bible, it says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28). Similar beliefs to this biblical quote were very likely taught in church services during the times of slavery, but many people would also believe that slaves do not count so they are not going against these values. The whole novel, today, is still relevant and more people should read it because you will get a better understanding about the issues that America had in the 19th century. Even though the book was written over a hundred years ago, religious hypocrisy is still prevalent today. Religions have made people set historic events for thousands of years. Many people devote their lives to their religion and should learn to be a better person. Again, people can sometimes not be aware that they are going against their values which can hurt others. But, it should be a person’s responsibility to learn about our history and Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a perfect example of what to read and learn
