What is a man without his wealth? Some will say nothing, others will say something. Some argue that people who inherit their money would be nothing. An example of this is the Kardashians or Tom Buchanan. Tom inherited all his money from his family and hasn't made a dime of it.
The 1920s was a time of flamboyance and wealth in the upper class. Jay Gatsby, a man of old money, threw over the top parties, in which he would spend his money very nonchalantly. The ambiance of his parties greatly illustrated the upper class of the time. The author uses symbolism and characterization to support the central idea that the upper class was very careless, wealthy, and extravagant. Gatsby’s parties are luxurious, glamorous, and over the top.
The Great Gatsby Greed In life many people live with greed daily doing anything to fulfil the things that they need and greed for in their life. Many people have greed for money because the life that we live today is believed that if you don’t have money you can’t reach happiness. F. Scott Fitzgerald explains the story of a rich and wealthy man Jay Gatsby, who ultimately had everything a man could want, but struggled to find a future with the love of his life. Each character in The Great Gatsby has and shows a feature of greed for something they care for.
The Great Gatsby shows Fitzgerald’s view and portrayal of the effect of money on people’s lives. Fitzgerald implies that being wealthy can lead to many great things but that money is everything but happiness and even with Gatsby’s wealth and imaginative mind, he still can not satisfy the image of Daisy since she nor any other women could ever be the girl who he desires. (Durkin). Gatsby wishes that his wealth would bring him the happiness and satisfaction he desires but instead brings him to his deathbed.
It has long been said that money can’t buy happiness, but still people continue to use it’s acquisition to try to make themselves happy. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, the title character struggles with this realization. The book is set in New York during the ‘Roaring 20’s’, a time famous for its parties and lavishness. The book examines the attitudes toward money within the upper particularly through the lense of the new-money title character, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby dedicated his life to the acquisition of money with the goal of eventually acquiring the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan.

Money is divided into two types: Old money and New money. Characters like Gatsby have new money, because they have made their fortunes themselves. Daisy and Tom inherited some money which they own today. This money is called old money.
When Gatsby and Daisy danced Fitzgerald explains, ‘’I remember being surprised by his graceful,conservative fox trot’’(fitzgerald 105). This is important because of how Daisy and Gatsby first met because of the way they were together before he went to go fight in the war. Then, after he went to war, Tom gets married Daisy only because of his money, which is very wrong of Tom and Daisy. Some people go through hard times and,‘’if the most basic needs are not met emotional contentment cannot be achieved’’(Sheppard). The idea of money does make people happier to a certain extent.
One of the most impactful views on money in the story is Daisy’s. Daisy was a very wealthy snob for all her life and this is what drew her away from Gatsby when they first met. Gatsby was a military man with little money and Daisy was a girl looking to continue her life with a man who already had wealth “immediately and the decision must be made by some force of love, of money,” (Fitzgerald 151). Another view of money that shapes the story was Nick’s because he always wanted to get the most out of his money. He paid eighty dollars a month to get a view of all the beautiful houses around him instead of maybe buying a cheaper place in a different area.

The Connection of Wealth and Personality in Fitzgerald’s Works In our society, money is seen as the most important factor in decision making and in our overall lives. This is shown throughout all of Fitzgerald’s works and in many of his characters. His stories continually mention the effect that money has on the community. Scott Fitzgerald and has countless examples of the phrase “money can’t buy happiness” suggesting that the American dream and loads of money doesn’t suddenly make your life perfect and all your problems are gone, in fact, the story suggests the complete opposite. Scott Fitzgerald shows that every character who has money or character that is around the people that have money end up in more trouble and having more problems than the average person.

They all had made decisions based on love and money, no matter the consequences, no matter if it was good or bad they still made those decisions through the love they had for someone and their desire for money. Tom Buchanan 's love for daisy was pure and true throughout the book the great gatsby he even made some hard decisions all out the love possesed for her. A very critical part of the the novel was when tom 's wife had killed George Wilson 's wife Myrtle Wilson in a automotive accident. When George came to tom about what happened questioning him about who killed his wife, Tom could see that George was furious and would be willing to do anything to the person who killed his beloved wife.
