Corruption of Money Most people will agree if someone has too much money it can or will corrupt them if they don’t have self control. In the book The Great Gatsby money plays a big part throughout the story and is the main theme. Out of all the downfalls Gatsby has, there’s one that stands out the most. Gatsby’s downfall is thinking money can get him anything and take him anywhere he wants.

Money is the root of all evil and shapes people, money is also a “curtain” for the rich to hide behind. Hearing about money at parties and from interactions between old and newly rich characters is very common in the novel. You also hear about good and corrupt money frequently, but also how the money shaped the people of East and West egg.
The Great Gatsby was written by author F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The novel, set place in 1922, is a flashback of Nick Carraway’s experiences during his summer in West Egg, New York. Recently, Gatsby has had one of his grand parties and Nick has attended a lunch with Gatsby and Meyer Wolfsheim. During the 1920’s the pursuit for wealth and recognition in order to reach a certain status corrupted people and had them make unacceptable decisions. Throughout the novel the concept of classes in society is prevalent.

Jay Gatsby believes he can get Daisy to love him again by becoming rich, that money would make him happy, and that he could live a life with dishonest morals as long as he had money. In F. In The Great Gatsby the characters in the novel come from various social classes. Nick, Daisy, and Tom are from Wealthy families who have been wealthy for a long time. These characters are referred to as “Old rich” because of their families’ long histories of wealth. Jay Gatsby, unlike Daisy and Tom, did not belong to a wealthy family, and he earns his wealth through his own hard work and success. Although Tom and Gatsby are both wealthy, Tom and the other “Old rich” people look down at Gatsby.
In the book Gatsby says “Her voice is full of money.”. Pg.92 Gatsby is saying she has always been made of money. She hasn't never not had money in her life. He actual was poor at first and worked hard for his money Daisy and Tom never had
As the story progresses, the distinction between those with “old money” like Daisy and Tom Buchanan and those with “new money” like Gatsby can be clearly seen. This unmistakable division within the higher class reveals that the wealthy require separation even among themselves to feel superior. Heavily implied by this line said by Tom, “ I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him and I wasn’t far from wrong.” (pg.133) it can be assumed Gatsby’s money came from participating in organized crime and bootlegging.
If you were wealthy, it didn’t matter how you came about this wealth. ( come back and add more) Old money is having money inherited through generations, like family wealth. You were rich mainly because of your family having money. In the novel, Tom and Daisy Buchanan would be an example of this. New money is someone whose wealth was made by themselves, not inherited.
I think those are well thought out points that you found within those devices, however I think that there is more to be unpacked from the novel. I agree with your repetition of colours, particularly the green, which is shown through the green light of Daisy’s dock. I see this as a consistent reminder for Gatsby that in order to win Daisy, he must obtain a lot of green American dollars. The light could have been any colour, but chose to be green in order to demonstrate the hold money has on Gatsby. You also need to question the authenticity of the narration of this story.

By contrasting the expectations and reality of New York City life, Fitzgerald exposes the city’s promise of excitement in order to warn aspiring dreamers from falling into the trap of the unattainable American dream.
