As the story progresses, the distinction between those with “old money” like Daisy and Tom Buchanan and those with “new money” like Gatsby can be clearly seen. This unmistakable division within the higher class reveals that the wealthy require separation even among themselves to feel superior. Heavily implied by this line said by Tom, “ I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him and I wasn’t far from wrong.” (pg.133) it can be assumed Gatsby’s money came from participating in organized crime and bootlegging. During this time, both of these practices weren’t widely considered as honest ways to make money and because of this Gatsby is treated as an inferior.
