In the 21st century, most of us participate in social media now that it is easily accessible. We use social media for many reasons, but participation in the social media does not necessarily mean that we are narcissistic. Narcissism is the excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one’s physical appearance. However, what is considered narcissistic participation in social media? Narcissistic participation in social media means posting self-centred content such as selfies and self-centred captions on social media platforms. What is considered non-narcissistic participation in social media are posts that hold little relevance to oneself such as reposts, memes, fan accounts, or pictures of miscellaneous things such as food and nature. This essay will discuss why participation in the social media can be more than just narcissism. Social media can be used as a platform to create awareness and to promote social events, as a mode of communication with one’s friends and family, and as a way to keep track of one’s daily routine to find ways to improve.
