Crystal Castaldi Professor Douglas Brown Fyw 20 April 2018 Two Warring Worlds: An Analysis of Holden Caulfield and Nick Carraway The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a tragedy that, despite it taking place in the 1920s, describes many themes that still apply today. The character of Nick Carraway in Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby can be likened to Holden Caulfield from J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.
Thesis-Though the book explains the life of Jay Gatsby, it 's Nick’s experiences that make up the story through his own eyes, which makes him the protagonist. Body 1-At the dawn of the novel, Nick Carraway is the first person to be introduced, thus his authority of being a protagonist is initiated. “…But in the narrative of Nick Carraway; the narrator of the novel…” States Larry Amin. It is brought to the attention of readers overall that Nick is the novelist, which presents him with a special title, or even a different aura than all the other characters.
Each character deceives their friends and significant others to make themselves seem better. Every character shows their true colors throughout the book by how they treat each other. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, all characters lie and deceive others to get ahead. Nick Carraway is the one honest character except he condones everyone's behavior. He does not make Tom own up to his mistress.
As time continues indefinitely, humans, as a large population, inevitably develop. Together, advances in mathematics and science enhance society; likewise, but on a much smaller scale, individuals undergo a plethora of changes. These changes are not unlimited because humans develop physically, as well as cognitavely. To exemplify the statement, a young boy matures as he nears adulthood; thus, he endures a variety of changes, which may include moral reconcilliation. Like the young boy, Nick Carraway undergoes moral reconcilliation in the popular novel, The Great Gatsby.
Jay Gatsby, James Gatz, or Mr. Orange? Who really is Mr. Gatsby? No one seems to know exactly who he is except maybe, Nick Carraway. Many of his acquaintances didn’t know who he was or what he did. He was a man of mystery.
Nick seems not to be oblivious to his sadness, although he lacks knowledge about the cause of the emotion, for he admits that dinner alone at the Yale Club is, “for some reason [,]…the gloomiest event of [his] day” (62). After dinner, Nick studies in the library, which he considers a quiet and “good place to work”, although he does mention that “there generally a few rioters”, which contradict Nick’s purpose for studying there, because if Nick really didn’t want to be disturbed he would go home (62). After studying for about an hour, “if the night [is] mellow” Nick restlessly “strolls around” the avenues and although among many, he still “[feels] a haunting loneliness” and can “[feel] it in others”(62). Many of the characters did not change throughout the novel like Gatsby never changed and was very static throughout the novel but others were very dynamic and changed throughout the novel in many ways. Nick Carraway, the narrator of the novel, witnesses the many lies others weave in order to achieve their dreams. However, the greatest deception he encounters is the one he lives. Not having a true dream, Nick instead finds purpose by living vicariously through others, and he loses that purpose when they are erased from his life.

Each student is in detention for a different reason and each person has their own unique personality and values that are prevalent throughout the entire film. I believe that communication played a crucial role in the movie. Even with different tastes, personalities, and backgrounds, the characters still found ways to communicate with each other and agree with one another on issues and ideas surrounding their lives. Two characters from the movie that I found to be most like myself were Andrew Clark and Brian Johnson and a character that I found to be the least like me would be Allison Reynolds.
