Most may argue that being a good person is easy and that anyone can easily do it. But the reality is that it's hard, you need a lot of good traits and to learn that it's not always about you. Throughout the book Nick is that person, always putting others before himself. Though a good majority of the characters in the book aren’t the most genuine and good of people, Nick is one that stands out the most. Based on my reading, Nick is a good person because of his selflessness and trustworthiness towards others. Nick Carrway, throughout the book is a very selfless character, always doing things for others and not himself. This quote is going to show how unaware Nick was of himself, but more aware of others. When Nick is in the middle dealing with finding out that Daisy hit and killed Myrtle, and everyone is arguing, Nick realizes that it's his birthday. This shows a great number of significance because Nick was so caught up in worrying about everyone else and what was going on between gatsby, and Daisy, that he didn't even realize that it was his birthday until the very end of the night. Nick is never looking for help or a handout from others, when Gatsby said he’d have someone come over and cut the grass for him, Nick didn't think it was necessary. This goes back to when Gatsby wants Nick to bring Daisy over for tea, by having Jordan say, “He wants to know if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over." This instance makes him a very trustworthy character for everyone to be able to entrust their secrets with. Nick proceeds to describe himself as an honest person but saying how, “Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.” (Fitzgerald 170) . Nick knows that he is an honest person and that goes into him being trustworthy. Throughout the book he kept Gatsby and Daisy's secrets and he never said anything about what was going on, even when Tom wanted to know. Nick knew it wasn't his place to say anything so he kept they’re secrets, and waited for one of them to reveal what they were hiding. There were many instances where Nick was tagging along in someone’s schemes, like when he was with Tom and his mistress, “So Tom Bucannan and his girl and I went up together to New York- or not quite together, for Mrs.Wilson sat discrealty in another car.” (Fitzgerald 26). Nick knew that Tom had a mistress, since he went up state with them. Nick was the middle man with everyone and their secrets and never said anything to anyone no matter what. He was always there for things and kinda just sat back and observed and never said much about what was going on. I think that was why he was always involved in everyone’s shenanigans that nobody else knew about because they knew he wouldn’t
