Odysseus as a Hero
In Homer’s timeless epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus of Ithaca is a true hero. A hero is someone who is loyal to their country, loyal to their family and loyal to their god(s). Odysseus has proven himself a true hero as in the book and the movie, The Odyssey. The Odyssey is an excellent book to read to find out about loyalty and hero’s. In this story Odysseus is the hero but, in the beginning he is not a true hero yet, he is just the ruler of Ithaca. Odysseus has to go to war in order to protect his country, right after his son is born. He thought he was going to be back soon, but remained away, encountering many difficult tasks to overcome for about twenty years. Odysseus went to war in order to protect his country which proves loyalty to his country. Odysseus is also loyal to his country when Circe tries to persuade him to stay by saying“ You shall hear prophecy from the rapt shade of blind Tiresias of Thebes, forever charged with reason, even among the dead; to him alone, of all the flitting ghosts, Persephone has given a mind undarkened.” Odysseus tells us what he feels after the news, “ At this I felt a weight like stone within me, and, moaning, pressed my length against the bed, with no desire to see the daylight no more.” (Page 758 Line 1058-1064) This tells us that Odysseus can go home, just not straight home. In the movie, Odysseus receives a bag of winds to help him get home, but his men open the bag out of curiosity, and that blows the ship off course and Ithaca out of their sight, but Odysseus doesn't turn on his men, that proves he is loyal and understanding of his men.
