Introduction When evaluating the character, morals, and the outlook a person has on life, nature and nurture usually comes into question. The question of whether a person’s environment shapes the way they are or if that person is predestined to be a certain way based on genetics has been heavily debated. I personally believe that it is a combination of both, but that one will ultimately take over. Such is the case with my character traits which were revealed to me following a survey I participated in with VIA Institute on Character. From a young age she would always tell me to be honest with her and that it was one of the best qualities to have. Over the years I would experience my mom overshare her life with others and with me as well. Many things shared were inappropriate for a boy of 8 years old to hear. Some of the topics covered were intimate marital issues, infidelity, and mental instability which still stick with me to this day. It is a constant reminder that there is such a thing as too much honesty. By viewing this quality growing up, I believe that it has a lot to do with the way I am. I choose to be honest within reason depending on the situation. My significant other values this personality trait because she never has to guess what I am thinking. In turn, she knows that I welcome completely open and honest conversations between each other even if it may hurt one of our feelings. As stated by my survey results, honesty is “speaking the truth but more broadly presenting oneself in a genuine way and acting in a sincere way; being without pretense; taking responsibility for one 's feelings and actions” (VIA Institute). Humor Generally speaking, most people enjoy humor and laughter; myself included. Specifically, I like to bring light to situations that are normally serious in nature.
