Examples Of Ontological Materialism

Now, in some worldviews, such as ontological materialism, others are seen as mere matter in motion ,and mere physical mechanisms. Other, in term of ontological materialism, is all being with lives which is purely physical. I respectfully reject this view because that not all lives are able to think logically with valuable ideas and behave under ethical criterias. We are able to find reason in other mammals, but critical reflective reason is an emergent property that comes from nature and is mostly developed by human as critical thinkers. Human are special and different from other creatures because people do not only have moral duty to treat “self” and “others” equally based on ethical schema, but also can use critical thinking to develop and …show more content…

Ontological materialist argues that everything is nothing but matter in motion and is purely physical, nature is the reality that form purely based on evolution and all things can be reduced to nothing but physical points. First of all, if this view was true, then numbers, or mathematical formulas, could be reduced into some neurons firing in the human brain. But numbers or mathematical formulas are not “created” by human brains, they are certainly not just biochemical events in organic neurons, because math is found and discovered in nature. For example, human does not have the ability to create the number “2” by just staring at two items. Numbers are arbitrary objects which are provided or given by nature which defined by humans’ intellectual ability. Furthermore, this would imply the false view that mathematical formulas are artifact items and are created by human brain through biochemical events. Numbers are not just physical objects, they are untouchable, unsensible ,and undestroyable. They link human’s critical ideas into the physical world, they are both physical in reality yet have non physical identities. You cannot reduce such dual beings into matter in motion due to their uniqueness. Thus, it is false to argue that all numbers and mathematical formulas can be reduced into nothing but physical point in space-time. Additionally, even though I do agree ideas and consciousness is a result of natural evolution, they are not identical to matter. Thoughts arise from functions of matter, but ideas can return to matter and change matter. The concept of neuron firing is just a pathway of creating different mind, ideas can change the matter which means they can change the brian itself. If ontological materialism were right, then there cannot be illusions in nature. Because illusions can only be held in non-material thoughts/ideas
