In the second section of the book, “Unbroken”, the author talked a lot about the experiences of the crew that Louie was with when he joined the army. Louie ended up with Phil and several other men to form a crew with their plane, a B-24 model, which they named “Superman”. They were all great pals who went through thick and thin together, but they believed the chance of survival was slim. One day, they barely managed to get it back to home base on one mission when the enemy relentlessly attacked their plane. However, one crew member was beyond help and several more had injuries that rendered them unsuitable for battle, their plane was also unrepairable.
In Deborah Ellis’s The Breadwinner, Parvana is a young woman who must become a boy to get food for the family and I have decided to compare and contrast her to the courageous Harriet Tubman. She lives in a bombed out apartment with her five other family members. Her father was taken away by the surrounding Taliban because of his foreign education. The family has no choice but to cut Parvana’s hair and turn her into a boy so she can be the breadwinner.
Parvana experiences discrimination which is key to her coming of age. The story takes place during a time in which women and girls in Afghanistan are not allowed to go out without a man escorting them. They are not permitted to attend school, go to work, go shopping, use the bus or even go outside of their houses to get fresh air. This is shown when the narrator says, “Buses were not permitted to carry women who did not have a man with them” (Ellis 40). When Parvana’s father got arrested Parvana and her mother had to walk a long distance to see him because they did not have a man accompanying them.
I learned that perseverance was the key to success through my study of The Secret Life of Bees, Maus, and La Linea. Many individuals are able to succeed because they are willing to fight for what they want. Doing this they are shoulding perseverance. Perseverance in other words means to not give up. The novel “Call of the Wild” Buck shows perseverance by not giving up his leadership throughout the book when he got his new owners and new sled dog teammates. Even though he had to fight to keep his leadership, Buck never lost the leadership.
She put each one down slowly. There was no reason to hurry. She had no where else to go.’ This quote shows a difficult time in Parvana’s life, when her father dies, and she is burying him. This is important because even though she has no more family left, she has the strength and courage to move on through this demanding time.
The two stories called Michelle Kwan and Mae Jemison are similar because they both share the same theme of perseverance and they both follow their dream. Mae Jemison is the first African American woman who went into space. Michelle Kwan is a ice skater who took a big step to her dream. Perseverance is one word to describe how I have accomplished and succeeded in every goal I have committed myself to. Having the opportunity to apply for the National Honors Society is one goal I have so far accomplished this year. This not only demonstrates my hard work in different areas, including academics and clubs, but also my passion for helping others and my community. I think my experience with leadership and volunteer work will not only help me flourish, but also help my peers to flourish outside and inside the Society. This means that if they were to go outside, they would be breaking the rules and would be beaten. Paravana, to get around this, pretends to be male by cutting her hair and dressing as a boy to work and buy food to keep her family alive. Once it's time for Parvana to leave Afghanistan, she wants to say goodbye to the woman who was giving her gifts through the window. Since they've never spoken and the woman has to stay indoors, Parvana plants a special flower where she usually sits in the market place, which is right below the woman’s window. This flower that Parvana planted, is not only for the lady in the window, it also represents something different. Remember how scared and lonely she felt when she first started going to the marketplace?
