In the second section of the book, “Unbroken”, the author talked a lot about the experiences of the crew that Louie was with when he joined the army. Louie ended up with Phil and several other men to form a crew with their plane, a B-24 model, which they named “Superman”. They were all great pals who went through thick and thin together, but they believed the chance of survival was slim. One day, they barely managed to get it back to home base on one mission when the enemy relentlessly attacked their plane. However, one crew member was beyond help and several more had injuries that rendered them unsuitable for battle, their plane was also unrepairable.
In Deborah Ellis’s The Breadwinner, Parvana is a young woman who must become a boy to get food for the family and I have decided to compare and contrast her to the courageous Harriet Tubman. She lives in a bombed out apartment with her five other family members. Her father was taken away by the surrounding Taliban because of his foreign education. The family has no choice but to cut Parvana’s hair and turn her into a boy so she can be the breadwinner.
Parvana experiences discrimination which is key to her coming of age. The story takes place during a time in which women and girls in Afghanistan are not allowed to go out without a man escorting them. They are not permitted to attend school, go to work, go shopping, use the bus or even go outside of their houses to get fresh air. This is shown when the narrator says, “Buses were not permitted to carry women who did not have a man with them” (Ellis 40). When Parvana’s father got arrested Parvana and her mother had to walk a long distance to see him because they did not have a man accompanying them.
I learned that perseverance was the key to success through my study of The Secret Life of Bees, Maus, and La Linea. While studying the second book of the year, The Secret Life of Bees, I saw various illustrations of perseverance. This is the story of a young girl pursuing truth about her mother's death and along the way encountering some of the most influential people in her young life. Perseverance was a driving factor
Many individuals are able to succeed because they are willing to fight for what they want. Doing this they are shoulding perseverance. Perseverance in other words means to not give up. The novel “Call of the Wild” Buck shows perseverance by not giving up his leadership throughout the book when he got his new owners and new sled dog teammates. Even though he had to fight to keep his leadership, Buck never lost the leadership.
This is risky because the taliban don’t let women go outside. If Parvana gets caught she will face consequences like getting executed or thrown in jail. So this is a huge risk by just doing simple things but the Taliban has very strict rules for women. They can’t work, drive or even go to school to get a good education. Parvana’s mom Fatana is another character that shows risk by making a article
Perseverance is one word to describe how I have accomplished and succeeded in every goal I have committed myself to. Having the opportunity to apply for the National Honors Society is one goal I have so far accomplished this year. This not only demonstrates my hard work in different areas, including academics and clubs, but also my passion for helping others and my community. I think my experience with leadership and volunteer work will not only help me flourish, but also help my peers to flourish outside and inside the Society. Leadership is one of the pillars that the National Honors Society is built upon.
Finally, Parvana’s mother changes emotionally due to the effects of the Taliban civil war and the loss of her son.
(The Breadwinner). In relation to the gender/feminist lens, Parvana and her mother were being treated differently only because of their gender. Women are not only expected to hide and cover up, but also forced to. Parvana and her mother obviously did not want to stay inside because they needed food to survive, but they were forced to
Cheerleading, competitions, and a curse. Bring It On, released in 2000, follows the life of cheer team captain, Torrance Shipman (“Bring It On [2000]). Throughout the movie, she is faced with many difficulties. She believes that she is cursed because she dropped the spirit stick. Torrance has to deal with a team member being injured, boyfriend problems, and worst of all, a cheer rivalry.
This book describes how Parvana has perseverance and keeps working toward her goals, despite the obstacles she faces. First off,
She put each one down slowly. There was no reason to hurry. She had no where else to go.’ This quote shows a difficult time in Parvana’s life, when her father dies, and she is burying him. This is important because even though she has no more family left, she has the strength and courage to move on through this demanding time.

In order to fight poverty you must have perserverance. In these two stories the only way to survive poverty is to have perserverance in yourself, and the others affected by the terrible situation. To solve poverty you must have perserverance which is shown by the characters, events and setting when poverty seems to overpower them, but they persevere through. Angela's ashes by Frank McCourt portaits the theme of poverty requires perseverance. The characters Frank displays his perseverance to keep his family safe in his actions in the story.
This is proven in the text when it states, “‘I’m not sure this is a good idea,’ Parvana said to Shauzia the next morning……….Getting left behind did not sound so terrible to Parvana, but with a quick look across the market to the painted in window with her secret friend, she obediently fell in behind Shauzia.” This evidence shows that even though Parvana didn’t want to dig up bones, she persevered anyway and did it to make more money for her family. Parvana decided that her family was more important than her feelings about bone
