Early on in Kamila’s story when the Taliban first took over in Afghanistan her family had many serious discussions about the safest options for handling their future. The family knew that it was not safe for the men to stay in Khair Khana so Kamila’s oldest brother fled to Pakistan and her father left the capital city to go live with family where the Taliban had not yet taken over. During these conversations financials became a concern as none of the women in the family were allowed to hold a job outside of their home. As Kamila contemplates these issues Lemmon explains, “Kamila felt the tremendous pressure that weighed on her family, and she spent hours each day trying to think of ways she could help” (49). In Deborah Ellis’s The Breadwinner, Parvana is a young woman who must become a boy to get food for the family and I have decided to compare and contrast her to the courageous Harriet Tubman. She lives in a bombed out apartment with her five other family members. Her father was taken away by the surrounding Taliban because of his foreign education. The family has no choice but to cut Parvana’s hair and turn her into a boy so she can be the breadwinner.
Analysing a Cartoon WHAT DO YOU SEE? In this cartoon I see a baby lying in the crib which represents the asylum seekers that have been locked away and isolated on the islands. The barb wire typifies the harsh conditions and degrading treatment of the detention centres. Furthermore, the southern cross dangling in front of the baby illustrates the fact that the asylum seekers are very close and can always see Australia, however, they will never be able to reach it and set foot on Australian soil.
Parvana experiences discrimination which is key to her coming of age. The story takes place during a time in which women and girls in Afghanistan are not allowed to go out without a man escorting them. They are not permitted to attend school, go to work, go shopping, use the bus or even go outside of their houses to get fresh air. This is shown when the narrator says, “Buses were not permitted to carry women who did not have a man with them” (Ellis 40). When Parvana’s father got arrested Parvana and her mother had to walk a long distance to see him because they did not have a man accompanying them.
Parvana, the protagonist from The Breadwinner a book by Deborah Ellis, is courageous. First of all, she was made into a boy to make money. She had to cut her hair, wear her old brother’s clothes and go out into the market everyday, thinking someone would see past her scheme. If a Taliban had caught her she probably would’ve been tortured and sent to jail. Additionally, she has the problem of going to the bathroom as a boy.

Malala was living in war and was very paranoid, and also, When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and battled for her right to an education.
