This analysis looks at refugees and the social justice issue of Australia’s discriminatory treatment of refugees traveling to Australia seeking asylum. Australia’s current treatment of Asylum seekers includes taking them from an already extremely stressful environment and detaining them in remote detention facilities where they have limited interaction with family and friends. In Australia, refugees and asylum seekers are treated like the enemy in a war: the target of a highly resourced, military-led “deterrence” strategy complete with arbitrary detainment, detention camps, guards to terrorise them, forced deportations and the violent suppression of those who protest. Australia is failing to meet the standards required when regarding the treatment of asylum seekers. It is fact that asylum seekers make up less than 3% of Australia’s annual immigration yet the idea is being distorted to that of which they will overpopulate a country that prides itself on being a multicultural society. I want to shed light on the misconception that asylum seekers are not ‘legal’ when in actual fact it is a human right to seek freedom.
This cartoon was originally published by Jack Ohman for the Sacramento Bee in 2016. Ohman, finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Award drew this cartoon to portray Americans and the inability to decipher what is truly dangerous. The cartoon about Ebola and other causes of death shows that the main concerns of our everyday lives should not be focused on the “breaking news story” of the newfound deadly disease, but it should be focused on the lack of effect that the everyday bad habits have on us. American awareness of the importance of living a healthy life is lacking, which is what Ohman was trying to achieve with the cartoon.
In sight of the cold war, in 1961 the highest point of the cold war is when the episode known as “The Shelter” in the series called The Twilight Zone was created. The episode covered the possibilities of many particular situations that may have occurred in a desperate time like this if a missile was launched at the United States. At the beginning of the episode, Rod Serling himself tells us “what you are about to watch is a nightmare.” We get a very ominous sense of what is coming due to the eerie music that had been playing in the background, and we soon find out that this episode is just that. A nightmare, in the sense of the event that is occurring but also the constant battle of a nightmare between thoughts that may drive one crazy as well as those thoughts mixed with the people you knew as “friends.”
Picture book review: Stolen girl August 2015 ‘Stolen girl’ written by Trina Saffioti and illustrated by Norma MacDonald, is a touching, emotionally stirring picture book about the tourment a young aboriginal girl experiences when she was taken away from her mother, by the Australian government. In the book, Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom, the author, visits with Morrie to talk and spend time with his old professor. As they talk, Morrie gives Mitch messages throughout their Tuesdays to teach Mitch the important things in life. There are many themes Morrie gives Mitch throughout the book. The three main themes are love each other, to live a fulfilling life you must be your own person, and when you’re in bed, you’re dead.

Australia is the only country to have a system of mandatory detention where every single parent, man, woman, child who arrives here without a valid visa or illegal visa must undergo immigration detention immediately. The issue with the refugee treatment and mandatory detention in Australia is that their minds are so vulnerable and stressed after leaving their country. Detention can harm asylum seekers and refugees because they are indefinite meaning the government can detain people for the course of their life which has severe effects on a person’s emotions and wellbeing. Studies have shown that refugees who have come from a warfare filled country have and increased chance to undergo depression, self-harm and even attempt suicide when under a type of imprisonment such as immigration detention.

The explanations for their movement include issues such as social, racial, religious and political persecution, war, climate change, hunger and gender orientation. These vulnerable refugees have no other choice than to seek protection and we are denying their human rights and stripping away their human dignity. A United Nations Refugee Agency survey conducted in Australia in 2011 showed that 35% of people favoured turning back boats or detention of arrivals and deportation, while only 22% favoured eligibility for permanent settlement. Clearly there is much controversy surrounding this issue as it can create many effects within a nations, both positive and negative.
