In the book, Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom, the author, visits with Morrie to talk and spend time with his old professor. As they talk, Morrie gives Mitch messages throughout their Tuesdays to teach Mitch the important things in life. There are many themes Morrie gives Mitch throughout the book. The three main themes are love each other, to live a fulfilling life you must be your own person, and when you’re in bed, you’re dead. On page 91, Morrie says, “Love is so supremely important. One of messages Morrie states about his condition is on page 131, “When you’re in bed, you’re dead.” Morrie was not ashamed of his illness or what the affects were on his body. He knew that when he could no longer move or take care of himself, he was no longer living life. This quote came out of the ninth Tuesday meeting about love. With his family taking care of him, even when he was lying in bed, they loved him and he loved them. Even this aphorism is stating Morrie’s future condition, it also means that people should live life now before it’s too late. No one truly knows when their time is up. Instead of pondering when the end is, people should go out and enjoy life for what it is. To Mitch this was a big deal. His uncle died from cancer and scared Mitch. In turn, Mitch working know one day his life would end. The aphorism help Mitch relax and enjoy life.
