When I began to plan the persuasive essay, I had a clear research question I wanted to answer, as it was a question the entirety of America had been asking itself in recent months. However, I found it increasingly hard to form a thesis that answered this question. I knew the basic outline, but couldn’t decide on the best way to help these people, as every source I read and examined had a different idea of how to do the most good. I researched how bad the problem was and all the assistance that was needed overall but that still did not present me with a viable solution for our government, as we don’t have the resources to fix the entire region. In issues that affect the whole world or large parts of it, it is important to have varying perspectives in order to have a complete picture. One of the major revisions I made to my persuasive essay was my counter argument. In my first draft, I had a basic counter argument that wasn’t flushed out or refuted afterwards. Since it is expected of professionals in the field of global affairs to analyze and consider every argument, it was key I was able to dissect and then refute these claims that our refugee screening process is not good enough. “Even though the previously discussed security measures should put to bed those fears, many think it is still too easy to get into our country.. our refugee screening process is the most detailed in the world, and if there is any doubt as to if someone is a threat, they are not let into our country,” (Dickason 2016, p. 5). In the final draft of my paper you can clearly see the changes I made and the paragraph, and therefore my entire essay, is stronger for it. Another revision I made to pertains to the body paragraph I posted above. I found most of my evidence for this section only showed the lack of support from Europe, and not the tremendous burden placed on Syria’s neighboring countries.
