Character and Point of View In “The Gift of the Magi” In “The Gift of the Magi”, there are two main characters Jim and Della. They both love each other very much and seems to be the reason they keep working hard and sacrificing for each other because of their poor financial situation. Throughout the story we learn more about them and how they change. In “The Gift of the Magi” there is definitive evidence that the point of view is third person omniscient, and that both Della and Jim are dynamic characters.
In “The Gift of the Magi” the narrator tells the story in third person omniscient. The narrator seems to know everything about the characters and their lifestyle. “While the mistress of the home is gradually subsiding from the first stage to the second, take a look at the home. A furnished flat at $8 per week.” (Henry 1). The narrator not even being a character in the story knows about the protagonists and their home. Another detail about the point of view being third person omniscient is the narrator knows the feelings of the characters. “Jim stopped inside the door, as immovable as a setter at the scent of quail. His eyes were fixed upon Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not read, and it terrified her.” (Henry 3).
