Prejudice is something we see everyday: on the news, in social media, and even in the community. Prejudice isn’t something new either - Of Mice and Men shows that. Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, tells the story of one man with a mental disability (Lennie) and the other who takes care of him (George). They run from their hometown and begin work on a ranch. From here on out it is shown how Steinbeck’s characters relate and how they are different, through qualities and personalities. Many characters face discrimination in this book. Steinbeck shows how two characters, Crooks and Curley’s wife, are discriminated against and how it affects them. First of all, Crooks - the stable buck on the ranch - experiences the most discrimination in the novel because he is African-American. In one scene, Lennie (worker at the ranch) comes to Crooks’ room because he saw a light on, and Crooks tells him why neither of them are wanted: “‘I ain’t wanted in …show more content…

First off, she is not even given a name throughout the entire story, she is only referred to as Curley’s wife (Steinbeck). This shows that she is not even viewed as important enough to have a name; she is like an object, or even like an animal. In one event, she is explaining how she never gets to leave the house because Curley thinks she will get in trouble (she is the only woman on the ranch). He forces her into isolation: “‘Think I don't like to talk to somebody ever' once in awhile? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?’”(Steinbeck 85). This explains how she really does want to be able to go out and talk to people on the ranch, but because she is a woman, she cannot. Curley’s wife accepts discrimination because she is living the life that a woman was “supposed to” at the time, with a husband. She cannot change the way she is treated, because anywhere Curley’s wife goes, she will be discriminated against for her
