The society in which Bradbury shows us is dystopian for multiple reasons, with the extreme governmental control on the people, excessive amounts of propaganda, and finally the main topic of the story, the banning of books. We see the government controlling every facet of the people’s lives with jobs and even how one feels being completely. Propaganda is practically and literally dripping down every wall of every home through many different means. Finally, of course the ban on books present in the society which adds to and strengthens all the preceding points. Montag experiences firsthand the governmental control over the people, when his wife is “cleaned” after attempting suicide and she starts becoming an, “Ideal” citizen. …show more content…
We see it in the fire station in section one when it says that Benjamin Franklin was the first fireman, this fact is not incorrect, but it is being twisted in order to convince the people that this is the way things have always been and that to follow the book ban is required if they want to be a good citizen. We see throughout the story references to the parlor walls that Mildred is oh-so-fond of. The scripts released by the government are purely there to give a false sense of belonging to make the people obedient and docile. In the second as well as the final section, where Montag is on the metro, we see the advertisements being used as propaganda. The advertisments are played excessively loud in order to prevent any sort of thinking from occurring as well as to program people into only thinking about material possessions as the advertisments are purely for things, not ideas or services. One bit of significant propaganda we see comes over the radio when the announcer mentions that one million soldiers had been deployed, when in reality it was over ten millions. Faber says that one million sounds kinder than ten million, this government doesen’t want anyone to worry as that can lead to ideas and unrest. The final piece of propaganda is in the very last section when Montag is being chased by the hound but it loses his trail and they find a random person to be a fake Montag so the people of the society think that once again their government was victorious. This all comes to an ironic conclusion when the whole city is destroyed by a war they thought was going to be an easy
