Brainwashing; a method for systematically changing attitudes or altering beliefs. In our world today we have many different types of Governments that do their own brainwashing for example propaganda is used a lot in Dictatorships and leaders who have the most power over a state. In Dictatorships or Totalitarian states the use of propaganda is used to control the minds of the people and influence them as they see fit. In our society we have a Democracy, “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.” we elect our own officials who represent us and lead our country. "A totalitarian regime crushes all autonomous institutions in its drive to seize the human soul" (Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.). So in Fahrenheit 451 the firemen are that group that seizes control of everything but in this case they control the reading right of everyone. The Firemen are not in control of everything just the ability for people to read. The relevance to compare the firemen to a Totalitarian group is they are a group of people who control an aspect people’s lives by arresting them and burning their books. A Democracy is the most common form of government in modern times and it’s design and intention is to give every citizen the same amount of power, specifically giving them power to elect officials that will change laws and make decisions that reflect their preferences as a group, but in 451 the Firemen are just like a Dictatorship in they use their power to control people in to do as the Gov’t pleases not the other way
