The self is attained by people and their life experiences. “This is the part of the psyche that looks forward, that contains the drive toward fulfillment and wholeness” (journalpsyche.org). Using these two theories can help show that in “the fall of rome” the reader can see that Jerome has a problem with being African American. The society can take a toll on a person that is a minority. African Americans have not been superior because of the influence that the society has on them. In the novel “fall of rome”, Jerome has to deal with society in many different ways. Jerome uses the veil every time he goes to work. While at work he tries not to stand out or being different. He believes that because his whole life has been surrounded by whiteness that would make him white as well. The down fall of the veil is that the skin is the protector to allow people to see what is protected. Jerome later realizes that he being black is the only way he will stand out regardless of his position. Jerome also deals with double consciousness. Double consciousness deals with having two different beings. In Jerome’s case it is being both African and American. He tries not to be in touch with his black side, because he feels as though his credentials should be enough not to stereotype him. He tries to mask his blackness the best way he knows. This shows that he is aware of his blackness. Because he is aware of his blackness, he is not happy with himself. Fanon believes that one stereotype that African Americans are in social media. Using the African American and Psychoanalysis theories it is easy to see that African Americans have always been oppressed n=by the white society. In the novel, “fall of rome” Jerome shows how being inferior to the white society can effect a person’s life. The novel explains the trial that Jerome has to face for being the only African American at the Chelsea school. Inferiority is the concept that something or someone is better than something or someone else. Jerome is in denial of his race and believes because he lives like a white person he can have the privileges as a white person. Jerome also uses the model of psyche by Carl Jung. The model of psyche includes the persona, shadow, anima and animus, and the self. Jerome and Rashid both express the signs of being controlled by the shadow part of the psyche. The relationships that Jerome has with the white society also show how African Americans are inferior. Jerome is convinced that because his life is surrounded by white society and white culture that he is white. He forgets that he is African American until Rashid tells him about himself. In Fanon’s book he talks about the stereotypes that whites have of African Americans. There are other ways that African American inferiority is shown. These two writings and the two theories show how African Americans are inferior to the white
