Racial Discrimination Persists in the United States
The title of the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, makes many readers guess, as I do, that it is about killing a Mockingbird. After reading the novel, I learned that the author only used a little ink on the story of the Mockingbird. From the content of the work, mockingbird seems to have no direct relationship with the theme reflected, but in terms of its symbolic significance, the mockingbird runs through the whole work. Reading the work closely, it is not difficult to feel that the mockingbird symbolizes innocent and kind people. When you kill a mockingbird, it is like killing a kind and innocent person. Tom, a black man, was molested by Bob's eldest daughter, Mayella, but was vilified as a rapist. His employer said of him, “That young man worked for me for eight years and never gave me a whit of trouble”(Lee). He was an innocent victim. He didn't do anything wrong, he was trying to help Mayella, but he was accused of rape because of the color of his skin. The final court trial also proved the power of traditional ideas. Although some members of the jury were convinced by Atticus's words, they convicted Tom ultimately because he was black. Even though Tom went to prison, misfortune befell him. Later, he took out a big hammer and killed two Chinese employees successively. When he broke into the kitchen, he said to Latino dishwashers in panic: “Not targeting Latinos, just Chinese people”(Wang). Then he killed a Chinese cook with a hammer. It was a clear case of racial discrimination, but the US court exempted the white American from prosecution on the grounds that he was mentally ill. The final verdict was just as disappointing to the relatives of the deceased and the Chinese community as in the novel. The judge exonerated Martunovich from criminal responsibility because of his mental illness, but said he would be held indefinitely in a psychiatric hospital, undergo psychiatric evaluations every six months and have a chance to rejoin society if he recovers well. The three Chinese Americans were just trying to make a living and work in a restaurant, but the three of them were crushed to death for no reason like innocent mockingbird. By contrast, Martunovich did not beat people without
