Animals like birds can resemble many symbols and characteristics of one’s personality. According to Atticus it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird. In Alabama, Maycomb a mockingbird is a valued animal, just like Tom Robinson, Mockingbirds are identified as innocent creatures that show kindness and compassion who bring unity to the community. Tom Robinson was accused and convicted of raping Mayella Ewell he was an innocent man, Bob Ewell made up the story of Tom raping Mayella. “There’s something in our world that make men lose their heads – they couldn’t be fair if they tried the white men always win” (pg. 220) in the 1930s racism at the time was powerful and strong the connection it had with people made a hatred emotion towards Tom, the white men will always win. Despite all the evidence that prove Tom is innocent, people still view him as guilty. Tom Robinson never committed a crime he is as innocent as a mockingbird, if racism was not a big deal as it was Tom would be a free man. Secondly, even when Tom is on trial at a chance he might die, he still shows kindness and compassion like a mockingbird. During the trial, Tom was called up by Atticus to give his side of the story. Ironically tom would show kindness and compassion to Mayella he would often help her bust up a chifforobe for no charge and for no reason just feeling that it’s the right thing to do. When Tom was on the stand he explained that she would offer him money but Tom would not take it “she said, I reckon I’ll have to give you a nickel wont I? ‘no ma’am there aint no charge” (pg. 191). When Tom would help Mayella he would do it out of the kindness of his heart for no money, this shows how kind Tom is even thought he is poor he still turns down money from Mayella. Without tom knowing what’s happening the black community of Maycomb unite and show respect towards Atticus and Toms family. The black church collects donations and shows their appreciation towards Atticus for defending Tom. Reverend Sykes closed his ceremony and requested an offer to the black church. “You all know what its for – Helen can’t leave those children to work while toms in jail. If everybody gives one more dime we’ll have it” (pg. 122). The money being collected is used for Toms family to help them out as Toms In jail they kept the doors shut until they had 10 dollars for Helen, the black community unite and bring donations to Toms family. By the end of the trial on the top balcony, the black community rise for Atticus because they know he did his best to defend tom Robinson, to show their appreciation they brought loads of food to Atticus’s house Calpurnia brought the food in and explained to Atticus what was happening. “This was all round the back steps when I got here this morning they – they preciate what you did Mr. finch” (pg. 213). After the trial the black community bring food to Atticus’s house loaded with tomatoes, pork, beans. This was the only way the black community could unite and show their appreciation towards Atticus for defending Tom Robinson.
