Everyone in the courthouse on the night of the trial knew that Tom Robinson was innocent. But at the end of the trial, that didn’t matter. Tom Robinson was a black man, and because of this difference that should not make a difference, he had no say over the family of whites, the Ewells. Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted of raping and beating Mayella Ewell. The evidence of the case leads to the conclusion that Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father was responsible for this misfortune. The stories of what happened the night of the alleged rape walk the same trail in the beginning. Mayella asked Tom to help her cut up a chiffarobe. Both parties agree on the fact that Tom has helped Mayella on multiple occasions. Tom stated, “Seemed like every time …show more content…
Ewell and his daughter, Mayella’s testimonies say that Tom jumped on Mayella, beating and taking advantage of her until she finally passed out. That is when Mr. Ewell came into the story. He came and saw that mayella was badly beaten and had been raped, but he never took Mayella to see the doctor. This sets off red flags. Bob Ewell noted that Mayella was badly beaten. But when Atticus asked him why he didn’t take her to the doctor. Bob answered “Wasn’t no need to. I seen what happened.” (Lee 199) This was alarming to me and the rest of the jury. But perhaps it wasn’t too alarming, for Tom was still convicted. We all knew that any parent who cared about their child's well being would consult a doctor for the injuries that Mayella had. But as Mr. Ewell continued to plead his case. He came across the reason I knew for sure that Mr. Ewell was lying. He described mayella’s injuries all the right side of her body. Meaning that a left handed person would have had to beaten her. It then came to me that Tom’s left arm was defective from birth. Just as that thought processed into my brain, Tom’s Lawyer, Atticus pointed out that Bob Ewell was left handed. This crime would have been 1,000 times easier for Mr. Ewell to commit than it would have been for
