Racism is a six letter word that is rarely ever overlooked. According to the American Heritage College Dictionary, there are actually two definitions of this ugly, horrid word. The first definition of racism is “the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others”. Secondly, racism is, “Discrimination or prejudice based on race. There are many different and diverse examples for both definitions. For example, the first definitions relates to American history by saying that slavery in America showed how African Americans and white people were drastically different. The processes came together and the growth of the worker’s movement and militant strikes started to begin because of these big economic changes. Many of the people that were involved had led the fight against slavery. One of the people who took part in this action was the great abolitionist Wendell Phillips. Today, in America, slavery was abolished when the 13th amendment that was passed in 1865. The 13th amendment states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Still today, minorities are treated like second class citizens. For instance, there are riots today across the United States has created the movement called Black Lives Matter. This movement is stating how African Americans get arrested or even killed because police or people think they did something
