Aboriginal Lives under Fire Throughout the novel The Day Road by Joseph Boyden, there are scenes, attitudes, and references that relate to issues that indigenous people face. The issue of aboriginal men and women being physically, verbally, and mentally assaulted in Canada on a daily basis. This is presented through both Xavier and Niska’s experiences, Xavier’s being through his treatment in the war and Niska’s being from all throughout her life. Now imagine living in an area where your race is treated differently, where the mass population calls you a waste of space.
Racism in Eastside High School There are many discriminated schools in the world to this day, most of them having to take place in the lower income areas. While in Eastside High School, in the movie Lean On Me didn’t seem like one of those trashy High Schools with a poor foundation of people. Yes, there were many students in their that weren’t the richest, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that before Mr. Clark had left the school, Eastside High was very mature and clean. Students aren’t taught bad things on their own.
One example of institutionalized racism that was demonstrated in 13th is the mass incarcerations of minorities. I think it is a problem not only because there is a disproportionate amount of minorities but also because people do not realize this is happening. It is institutionalized racism because after being in prison these minorities cannot vote or get a job and therefore puts them at a disadvantage. I think getting people to realize this problem is the first step to address it but I am not sure what should happen next.
Racism is the belief or idea of superiority of one race over another, often resulting in discrimination and/or prejudice towards people of the race. The ideology underlying racist practices often includes the idea that humans can be divided into distinct groups that are different due to their social behavior and their innate capacities as well as the idea that they can be ranked as inferior or superior. Since the late 20th century the notion of biological race has been recognized as a cultural invention, entirely without scientific basis. Structural Racism in the U.S. is the normalization of an array of dynamics – historical, cultural, institutional and interpersonal – that routinely advantage whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity, primarily characterized by white supremacy – the preferential treatment, privilege and power for white people at the expense of Black, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Arab and other racially oppressed people.
Racism in 1880 During the years 1870 through 1900, racism vastly continued across the United States. African Americans and Native Americans were treated brutally by white men; from being pushed off their land and having their homes taken away from them, to make room for white families or workers, to being brutally murdered by soldiers or hate groups. Whites controlled virtually everything including businesses, the railroads, farms, and most of the government. Once the African Americans were freed, many had hopes to become self-sufficient farmers like the white citizens around them.
The film District 9 was directed by Neil Blomkamp and released in 2009. The main actors in the film were Sharlto Copley who portrays Wikus Merwe and Jason Cope who portrays Christopher Johnson. The film is meant to depict the life of an extraterrestrial race that was forced to stay on earth in deteriorated conditions, while also facing discriminatory treatment from humans. Thus, District 9 demonstrates racism through the aliens, the process of dissociation of Wikus as a human, and how the director intended to humanize the aliens to the audience.

Although blatant acts of racism have diminished since the 1900’s, acts of casual racism are currently predominant in America. In the film, Get Out, written and directed by Jordan Peele, Peele claims that acts of casual racism are aimed at ethnic minorities. Peele begins to build his credibility by addressing issues of casual racism in the text, targeting the White liberals as his audience, using constraints to encourage empathy for his characters, and by being influenced to create Get Out from the controversial issue of America being a “post-racial” society. Peele, a comedy writer, actor, and ethnic minority, has been praised for his portrayal on his hit comedy show Key And Peele. Despite all the laughs during Key And Peele for over a decade, Peele had a more vital message to deliver; Get Out is a portrayal of Peele’s perspective on casual racism.
Social forms of racial oppression include exploitation and mistreatment that is socially supported. Systematic oppression of a race means that the law or police work to oppress a certain race. Institutionalized oppression refers to establishing laws, practices and customs that produce inequities based on race. Internalized oppression involves an oppressed group using the oppression they experience and using it against themselves and fellow members of their race. Three words: racism, sexism, and prejudice. Throughout my high school career, psychology has been the main vehicle through which I solved problems or understood current events amidst the roaring politics and human issues of the modern day. The way in which groups of people interact and view themselves within the scope of society fascinates me as it is the crux of human behavior. Taking psychology classes at a university standard would satisfy a portion of my curiosity for understanding humans but when I saw the specific class that I could take at Boston University I have remained mesmerized. I found an ideal course for what most intrigued me throughout all of my current psychology classes.
This essay seeks to examine modern day manifestations of both racism and classism within a school setting. As investigation has shown, racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic discrimination may lead to negative mental health effects. This is alarming as such discrimination continues to linger among school systems ranging from elementary aged students all the way to college aged students.
