F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has been a critical novel in Ashland High School and schools around the country, with themes relevant to this day, which is why it should not be eliminated from the curriculum. Fitzgerald provides concepts about the real world and an article that backs this up is Ruth Whippman’s “Why the American Dream Is Making You Unhappy”. Throughout both the novel and article, there are concepts of appearance versus reality, showing the corruption of the American Dream, displaying the wealth gap between both classes, and teaching to not dream big without a plan. Fitzgerald has Gatsby and Daisy apart from each other for nearly five years and in this time Gatsby had created and imagined a perfect Daisy. When they finally meet after years apart, Nick says “There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams–not through her own fault” (Fitzgerald 95). This shows how Gatsby had thought so highly of Daisy and was expecting nothing but perfection, in return, she was not exactly how he had envisioned her. This shows that having high hopes is good, but only with knowing there may be other outcomes as well. For students especially this is important, whether it be a test or quiz and a student expects to get a better grade than they got, but it's being able to accept it and learn from it. In addition, in the article, it says how the American Dream has become the production of unrealistic expectations. People think way too far ahead and “anything short of greatness can start to feel like failure” (Article). This shows how people are subconsciously making them doubt themselves at being the person they strived to be due to unwanted results. This can create mental stress and breakdowns, but this can all be fixed as long as students learn that failing and making new paths is how to learn more.
