The Modern Library places The Great Gatsby at #2 on its list of Best Books of the 20th century. This is because the main theme in the novel is about The American dream. “The American Dream is the belief that anyone, no matter their race, their class, their gender, or their nationality, can still be successful in America if they just work hard enough.” Students seem to enjoy The Great Gatsby, this is because in highschool and collage there are many differences in schools, and students start to see the “real world”. The last line of the book teaches a great life lesson, along with the American dream teaches which teaches everyone a life lesson. Over all people care about this book because of the life lessons it teaches students, and how it teaches people about wealth, and love. The novel talks about “new money” which relates to Gatsby, and “old money” which relates to Tom. The novel mentions ":Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had” (Fitzgerald 1). Nicks father says this because some people dont have the things that Nick had. Nicks father wants him to be grateful for everything. Nick needs to keep in mind that not everyone had the money he had, because of the family he comes from. Love is also shown in the book because of how Gatsby dreams to have Daisys love. In the end, Gatsby never ended up with Daisy because while he was at war, Daisy married Tom. This can be another life lesson to not just studentd but to everyone. Even if people have a big dream, no matter how hard you try, sometimes you need to accept it wont work
