The author’s use of a rhetorical question is effective to get the point across to the reader. This rhetorical question is used to put emphasis on the fact that it can be a struggle to acquire the basic need of life. This might be an effective way to hint about Aminata’s past. As she is about to write her story she says she has a better bed then she ever had in her life. This questions is used to foreshadow what Aminata will talk about and makes the reader believe that Aminata might have gone through a rough life trying to survive and get the basic necessity of life, but then things got better as she is now sleeping in a better bed and now she does not have to worry about the needs of life. The author used imagery to portray how Aminata stepped on the corpse which leaves reader feeling disgusted since it has a vivid description. The dead body shows us the savagery of the people taking Aminata to the boat. First off the individual probably died because of being treated in an inhumane manner to the extent that he died, secondly they did not even bury the corpse which is unethical both of these facts prove that they are savage and makes the reader think about what will happen to Aminata on this journey, and whether or not she will come out alive because she could end the very same way as the corpse. In this case he uses a carcass to refer to the boat, this represents all the hardship she went through on the boat. This metaphor was effective because it helped portray everything that had happened on the boat by using a carcass and how it is still bothering her using flies and stink. The author also stated “you walked passed and now you must keep walking” This basically mean that she had survived the hardship on the boat and that she must continue to survive. This statement is important because Biton is giving advice to Aminata, he is essentially saying that she should forget about the past and focus on the future, which will help survive in the cruel world she lives in. This statement also tells us that Aminata is mentally strong as she survived through the worse on the boat at a very young age. That being said the people that were not mentally strong were impacted, for example Fomba who does not speak anymore. This can be related back to the quote on page 29 where Aminata’s father states: “beauty comes and goes. Strength you keep forever”. Her father told her this lesson to make her realize that being mentally strong will keep her going in life and will help her overcome hardship that she faces, which in this case she did by surviving the voyage to America and now Biton is suggesting that she continues to walk past the carcass or in other words continue to survive and stay
