From the 1920’s to the 1930’s, the life and spirit of the average American took a drastic downfall and ruined the overall moral of society. The political cartoon “Watch Your Step” that depicts Ancient Rome standing on a pile of rubble and Uncle Sam standing on peak prosperity is a good representation of what society in the 1920’s was like. Ancient Rome has always been seen as the greatest civilization and the most prosperous empire. Uncle Sam is standing on the peak of prosperity to show that America has now passed Rome. The living quality of American society during that time was the greatest that the world has ever seen. The stock markets were rising at an fantastically quick rate. It was like nothing that was ever seen before anywhere in the world. Another quote from the Great Gatsby is “ My life has got to be like this, it’s got to keep going up.” This quote represents the mindset of society at this time. Everyone thought that it could only get better and better, but not worse. Everyone thought that the quality of life could not go down. It shows that people were now starting to become worried that the booming stock market would come crumbling down. Society saw that it was indeed too much of a great thing and the economy would not be able to last much longer on the stock market. One quote from the Great Gatsby movie, “All the bright, precious things fade so fast, and they don't come back”, is another example of the societal attitude toward the stock market right before the Great Crash.
