There are many examples of sacrifice in A Tale of Two Cities. The people of France are willing to sacrifice their lives to escape the monarchy that they lived in. Dr. Manette was imprisoned because he sacrificed his freedom to stand for what he believed in. Dickens shows us with these examples that the pain is temporary, and the sacrifice will lead to happiness. Dr. Manette, after many years is reunited with his daughter, Lucie Manette. The French people, after misery, overturn the monarchy and are returned to peace. The main example of sacrifice in the book is when Sydney Carton sacrifices himself to save Darnay’s life, and his family. Carton does this because he loves Lucie and wants the best for her.
